Specialized Sports Medicine Care for Student Athletes
According to a study published in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine, nearly 8 million high school students participate in sports each year with an overall rate of 2.29 injuries per 1,000 athletic exposures. Boys' football, girls' soccer, and boys' wrestling had the highest injury rates. Sprains/strains and concussions were the most common diagnoses.

Munson Healthcare’s highly skilled and experienced sports medicine and rehabilitation team diagnoses and treats a wide range of sports injuries, including for student athletes. We also can help your child understand how to prevent future injuries.

The following Munson Orthopedic Institute physicians are fellowship trained in sports medicine, specialize in both adult and student athletes, and are accepting new referrals.

September is...

Sepsis Awareness Month
September is Sepsis Awareness Month, an annual observance to raise awareness of this urgent, life-threatening medical emergency. Sepsis is the body’s overwhelming response to infection, which can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death.

Did you know 87% of sepsis cases begin outside of the hospital? Many patients seek evaluation prior to hospitalization:

  • Nearly 50% contact their primary care provider within 72 hours of admission
  • 20% are seen on the day of admission

Make sure you know the signs and symptoms of sepsis. These Munson resources can help:

Following discharge, it is recommended that a patient who suffered sepsis be seen by their provider within two weeks. Studies suggest prompt follow-up can help prevent sepsis-related readmissions. Performance data from Munson Medical Center’s HMS Sepsis Patient Data & Quality Report shows 52% of our patients reported follow-up with their PCP within 2 weeks of discharge. 28% of our patients are readmitted within 30 days.

These follow-up appointments represent an opportunity to screen our patients for infection and reoccurrence of sepsis and to educate them regarding the warning signs: Sepsis Alliance Zone Tool.

Post-sepsis syndrome is a condition that affects up to 50% of sepsis survivors. It includes long-term physical and/or psychological effects similar to ICU syndrome. Are you aware of post-sepsis syndrome? These resources can help:

These and more sepsis resources are available online on Munson’s For Providers website.

MMC Emergency Department Celebrates Successful “Quick Care Zone” Pilot
Munson Medical Center providers, nurses, clinical staff, support staff, and leaders celebrated completion of a 2-month pilot program yesterday with an official ribbon cutting for the Emergency Department’s new Quick Care Zone.

To further improve efficiency and comfort for patients, a physician or advanced practice provider has been added in the triage area to see patients at the very beginning of their visit to expedite the ordering of lab or imaging tests that might be necessary.

The Quick Care Zone represents one tactic in an overall strategy to leverage healthcare system resources to ensure all our patients receive the right care in the right place at the right time.

COVID-19: Caring for Patients and Reducing the Spread
As we are seeing an increase in COVID-19 in the region, here are some reminders:
  • When caring for a patient with a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection, use standard airborne with eye protection precautions, including either an N95 mask with eye protection or a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR)/Controlled Air-Purifying Respirator (CAPR).

  •  In addition, to keep yourself, your coworkers, and your family safe:
    • Practice good hand hygiene. Wash hands frequently with soap and running water, or alternatively with hand sanitizer.
    • Stay up to date on vaccinations.

  • Munson Healthcare has NOT changed our return-to-work policy following a COVID-19 diagnosis: If at day 5 symptoms have completely resolved, the team member may return to work on day 6 but must mask at all times from day 6 through day 10 while at work, maintain social distancing, and be in an isolated area separate from others when removing mask to eat or drink.

Nirsevimab Recommended for Prevention of RSV in Infants
Nirsevimab (Beyfortus), a long-acting monoclonal antibody, is recommended over palivizumab for the prevention of RSV in infants because of its efficacy, duration, and convenience. Read the AAP’s recommendation. Munson Medical Center will be immunizing newborns who are noninsured or eligible for Michigan's Vaccines for Children (VFC) program.

We need your help to encourage parents to keep up to date on vaccinating their children against preventable illnesses. Please talk to every patient, every visit, every time about immunizations. Help us keep one another healthy. RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization among infants in the U.S. RSV prevention products remain our single most important tool to protect infants from RSV. The I Vaccinate initiative (supported by MHA) has a provider toolkit to help providers educate Michigan parents about the safety and effectiveness of childhood immunizations.

Updated CDC Meningococcal Vaccine Recommendations
The CDC has updated its meningococcal vaccine recommendations, specifically a new dosing schedule for Bexsero. Providers are asked to ensure all people recommended for meningococcal vaccination, including people with HIV, are up to date for meningococcal vaccines.
