Telmediq Paging Going Live Next Tuesday!
What Your Providers Need to Know and How You Can Help

PerfectServe’s Telmediq (Munson’s new paging solution) will go live Tuesday, July 16

Here's how you can help support your providers:

  1. Download and Login: Although only on-call physicians, on-call APPs, and leaders are required to use the Telmediq app for clinical paging, it is encouraged for all providers to support timely patient care. If clinical staff do not have Telmediq downloaded, they will not receive pages to their mobile device on July 16, which could include important patient information.

Note: If your providers have already downloaded Telmediq, please have them update to the latest version.

  1. Training: Optional training is being offered and encouraged.

  2. Key Points for Clinical Paging Process

    • As nurses do not currently have smartphone capability in their workflow, nursing staff will receive any messages sent on a desktop computer. Please do not send time-sensitive messages to non-providers via the text message feature. Instead, please provide or respond to a call back number as in current state. We chose this vendor as it lays the groundwork for more two-way functionality in the future.
    • Orders should NOT be sent or taken via Telmediq paging. Please continue to follow current procedures for this, i.e., Provider Order Entry plus the Verbal Orders policy exceptions.

App Support: Encountering issues downloading Telmediq? Call the Help Desk at 231-935-6053.

Be Vigilant for Scams Targeting Provider Licenses
LARA is asking providers to be aware of scams targeting provider licenses. A scammer impersonates a LARA official and threatens their professional license is at risk if they don't comply with demands, including a payment to maintain their license. For details, read the LARA news release.

Tips to avoid falling for one of these scams:

  • Licensees should be suspicious of unsolicited requests for any of their personal information. LARA will not contact licensees threatening to suspend their license.

  • If there are any hyperlinks, check the URL before clicking. LARA websites will always have "michigan.gov" in the URL. If you suspect an email might be malicious or spam, click the “Report Phishing” button to have it reviewed by a human being 24/7. You’ll receive feedback on the malicious email you report within 20 minutes.
  • Scammers will spoof LARA's 517-241-0199 phone number to appear legitimate.

  • If you suspect fraud, report it immediately by emailing LARA or calling 517-241-0199.

Gabapentin is No Longer a Controlled Substance in Michigan
As of May 28, 2024, a prescriber doesn't need a controlled substance license to prescribe Gabapentin. Gabapentin is now reclassified as a legend drug at the State and Federal levels. Gabapentin no longer needs to be included in reporting to the Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS). However, we encourage prescribers to continue to monitor the use and potential misuse of this drug.

More Grandview Parkway Construction
Although construction on Segment 1 of Grandview Parkway in downtown Traverse City completed in June, we still have another 4 months of construction ahead of us as Segment 2 construction started this week and continues into November. The next segment of construction will result in extensive traffic delays, but there are no major traffic detours scheduled to dramatically reroute traffic like we saw in Segment 1. (Traffic is still going to be slow, though.)

Patients traveling to a Munson Healthcare location or any other clinic in Traverse City may have their travel time extended. Please remind patients of the ongoing construction when appropriate.

For more information on the Grandview Construction project, you can access the MDOT and City of TC pages via our Grandview Parkway Construction updates page.

 Clinical Patient Care

Informed Consent When Treating Minors
When treating minors (≤17 years of age), a signed consent must be obtained from a parent or legal guardian prior to providing treatment.

Provider Guidance
  • If there is any doubt about who can give consent to treatment for a minor, refer to the MHC Pediatric Medical Care Decision Making Flow Chart or contact Munson's Legal Department at 231-935-6553. After hours or on weekends, call the Switchboard to reach the Legal Department team member on call.
  • Obtain and review the court documents and place in the medical record.
  • Document all consent decision-making reasoning in the patient’s chart.
  • If there is any ambiguity, make the decision that is in the best interest of the patient.

For more on this topic, read the latest It Happens Here on minor guardianship.

Annual 3D Mammography Screening is Recommended
The American College of Radiology (ACR), Society of Breast Imaging (SBI), and Grand Traverse Radiologists PC currently recommend annual 3D screening mammography beginning at age 40 for women at average risk.

Advanced 3D mammography is available at all Munson screening locations. Please set 3D as the default orderable for mammography in your office’s EHR.

For more provider guidance on Mammography, refer to clinical and educational Mammography resources.

2024-25 Northern Michigan Antimicrobial Guidelines
Munson has released its 2024-2025 Antimicrobial Guidelines, which are available here:

Doxy PEP Clinical Guidelines for Bacterial STI Prevention
The CDC has published clinical guidelines on counseling patients regarding doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (or doxy PEP) for bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention.

  • Doxy PEP has proven to reduce the risk of getting a bacterial STI for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men and transgender women at increased risk for these infections (specifically, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea).

  • The CDC recommends providers discuss doxy PEP with all gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men and transgender women with a history of at least one bacterial STI (syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea) in the last 12 months. If offering doxy PEP, providers should write a prescription for self-administration of 200 mg of doxycycline within 72 hours of sex.

MDHHS highly encourages the adoption of doxy PEP to combat alarming increases in bacterial STIs in Michigan. Doxy PEP is readily available at any local pharmacy.

Provider guidance is available at michigan.gov/hivsti and munsonhealthcare.org/hiv. For additional guidance on prescribing Doxy PEP, please contact the Thomas Judd Care Center at 231-935-7548.

 Reminder

How to Protect Lab Specimens from the Summer Heat

A reminder to use your office’s insulated specimen drop box (if available) and always place frozen ice packs in your drop box to keep the specimens from getting too hot.

One Patient Record – Wave 2
In May, the One Patient Record project team went through the first round of integration testing (IT1). Several issues were uncovered in that testing which has caused the team to adjust the timeline.

  • In order to provide more time to address the outstanding issues, One Patient Record will not be going live with Wave II on September 9, 2024, as originally planned.
  • As you make PTO plans for the rest of the year, please know the ‘go-live’ is not expected to take place in calendar year 2024.
  • Right now, the team expects the go-live to take place in the first quarter of calendar year 2025.
  • The team will know more after IT2 testing concludes in late August or early September and will share a more definitive date then.

If you have any questions, please reach out to OnePatientRecord-Questions@mhc.net.
