Munson Healthcare and Partners Receive Funding for Mental Health Center

The Grand Traverse County Board of Commissioners approved the request from Munson Healthcare (MHC) and partners for $5 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds for a mental health wellness center.

“We are grateful to the Board of Commissioners for their investment in the future for mental health services in northern Michigan,” said Munson Healthcare Chief Operating Officer Laura Glenn. “This funding approval will allow us to move forward with our first phase of expanding mental and behavioral health services for children, youth, and adults in our region.”

Phase one will encompass using the existing MHC Behavioral Health Services building as the site for the center. The center will bring existing access and crisis services under one roof, 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, and provide a coordinated, systemic response for children, youth, and adults regardless of insurance or ability to pay. Services would be added or expanded in additional phases as the center is developed, staff hired, and resources secured.

Although the center will be located in Traverse City, it will provide support and mental health services across northern Michigan.

Postpartum Depression

Around 70% of new parents experience the "baby blues," with another 1 in 10 co-caregivers experience postpartum depression. Read more about the signs and symptoms of these conditions and how your patients can seek help.

Same-Day Care

The northern Michigan population swells by 78% in the summer which causes an increased demand for healthcare services.

With emergency departments seeing a 42% increase in visitors in the summer, it is important to note where residents and visitors with non-life threatening conditions should seek care when a primary care physician is not available:

Munson Healthcare's goal is to make sure people get the right care, in the right place, at the right time. For more on where to seek care, read the related news release or visit munsonhealthcare.org/findcare.

CLINICAL UPDATES

CDC Health Advisory | Measles

The CDC has issued a health advisory on the potential for measles cases related to international travel.

As Michigan’s overall childhood vaccination rates have declined during recent years, please encourage parents to keep up to date on vaccinating their children against preventable illnesses such as measles. The I Vaccinate initiative, supported by MHA, has a provider toolkit to help providers and offices educate Michigan parents about the safety and effectiveness of childhood immunizations.

RSV Vaccine for Older Adults

The CDC recommends use of new RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) vaccines from GSK and Pfizer for adults 60+, using shared clinical decision-making. Learn more about this new recommendation.

ICD-10 Now Required for Ancillary Services

Effective July 1, ICD-10 diagnoses codes and a narrative description which support medical necessity must be included on all outpatient ancillary service orders such as lab, radiology, and EKG.

Reminder: Collaborative Practice and Prescriptive Authority Delegation Agreements

Munson Healthcare has completed a review and update of Advanced Practice Providers (APP) collaborative practice and prescriptive authority agreements to meet the Michigan and Federal guidelines. All APP agreements should be updated so that they are current and compliant.

New changes will go into effect on August 1, 2023. Practice managers will now be responsible for ensuring that practice agreements are completed, on file in the office, and updated as needed.
