Partnership with Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services
MHC has formed a partnership with Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services in Grand Rapids to work with two psychiatric residents during their rural psychiatric track. The residents will be practicing in the area for two years, working across the service line with primary focus in our outpatient clinic.
The residents are also working with the Pine Rest clinic in Traverse City, Northern Lakes Community Mental Health, Munson Family Practice Center, and The Street Medicine program. This partnership will give the residents excellent training in rural psychiatry. The partnership is going well and the hope is this will result in recruiting more psychiatrists to our region.

COMMUNITY HEALTH
Principals of Motivational Interviewing Series: Roll with Resistance
People don't resist change; they resist being told to change. It is natural for a clinician to want to give advice and direction related to a behavior that is harmful. This is called the "righting reflex." Resisting the righting reflex goes back to the idea that during a conversation with a patient, the clinician should serve as the guide and not the expert. Often times patients are in the beginning stages of change – precontemplation or contemplation. During these stages resistance is normal. Using a combination of all motivational interviewing skills (reflective listening, affirmations, open-ended questions, summarizing) will help the clinician roll with resistance and make the patient feel they are being heard and are capable of change.
